Why I chose to take an online communication class:

 

I have signed up for an online communication class with ICC for the purpose of learning new technologies and gaining new skills. I have chosen the ICC’s Online Communications Class because I know and trust the ICC mentoring environment and I would like to model my own mentoring, online and elsewhere on the same foundation. 

Since community is highly valued in ICC, I knew that a cohort community would be the best way to attain these new skills in a way that promotes our commitment. A cohort is a small group, similar to a small class, but hopefully more personal and cozy so that everyone feels comfortable communicating with one another. We meet online in a video chat format once a week and comment on each other’s posts online. Some the of assignments are pretty fun, like making a podcast and making your voice sound much better by cutting out the noise and using special features, telling our True Story online with a picture, making a video, learning about the various social media platforms and when to use which and a blog style portfolio!

More importantly, through the OCC I would like to improve my ability  to follow the ICC philosophy depicted in the formula P3 + R3 = C3.  Which translates, Purpose, prepare, present plus rate, respond, record equals competency, character, and community.  While we need to think of the entire formula, I wanted to focus on purpose for online communication. How can I make sure my online presence has purpose? By remembering the ICC’s formula and taking this OCC class, I hope make ‘purpose’ a regular part of my online presence and eventually be able to mentor others to do the same.
